The “Big Beautiful Bill” and Its Impact on Obamacare

The proposed Big Beautiful Bill introduces several changes to Marketplace (Obamacare) health plans that could make it more difficult for individuals and families to enroll and maintain coverage. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), these changes could result in millions losing their health insurance, especially as enhanced ACA premium tax credits are also set to expire.

Key Changes

  • Elimination of Auto-Renewal
Marketplace plans will no longer automatically renew. Instead, individuals must manually re-enroll each year during the open enrollment period.

  • Increased Verification Requirements
Enrollees must update and verify income, immigration status, and other eligibility details annually or risk losing coverage.

  • Shorter Open Enrollment
The open enrollment period will be shortened, ending on December 15 instead of January 15, leaving less time for people to sign up.

  • Reduced Eligibility
Certain groups, including DACA recipients, would no longer qualify for Marketplace tax credits.

What This Means for Consumers

  • Increased Costs
Some individuals could face higher premiums and out-of-pocket expenses, as reported by KFF Health News.

  • Reduced Coverage
With fewer people eligible and stricter requirements, the CBO estimates that millions may lose Marketplace coverage.
